Book Review: Ranger's Apprentice: A Royal Ranger: Book 1

Len was trying to equate the current Princess Cassandra-the caretaker ruler of the kingdom-with the picture his companion had drawn of a wild adventurous tomboy terrorizing the castle guards. “You’d never guess it now. She’s so calm and dignified, isn’t she?”

“WHERE THE BLIND, BLUE, BLITHERING BLAZES HAVE YOU BEEN?” the calm and dignified Princess Cassandra demanded.

This is a great example that not everything is what it seems like, and I get to share with you a book that is full of surprises.

The book I read was Ranger’s Apprentice: The Royal Ranger: A New Beginning. This book has a fun and humorous personality with an emotional, entertaining, and exciting plot, while still maintaining a serious attitude. It was written by John Flanagan, an award winning author who has also written many other books. He is the author of Erak’s Ransom, which won the Australian Publishers Associations Book of the Year for Older Children.

Ranger’s Apprentice takes place in the ancient times in Araluen, which appears to be in the British Isles. Araluen has 50 fiefdoms or smaller districts. Most of the story takes place in the fiefdom of Redmont, the second largest besides the capital, Araluen. The capital has a large, magnificent castle, and all fiefs have a castle and are ruled by barons.

Princess Madelyn, or Maddie, is spoiled, strong-minded and privileged. She is a fifteen year old who seems to think the life of a princess is boring. She hates that her daily life focuses on practicing needlework and seemingly unimportant things. Instead, she would rather be hunting.

Rangers are kind of like a Medieval intelligence force. They are incredibly skilled with the bow, knives, and moving without being seen. Will Treaty is a legendary Ranger. He was once a humorous, happy person, but ever since his wife was killed in a senseless tragedy, Will hasn’t smiled and has trouble moving forward in his life.

Will the Ranger is obsessed with avenging his wife’s death. Determined to track her killers down and bring them to justice, he has rejected missions even if it means leaving his beloved Ranger corps. He has already refused two missions from his commandant so far, and if he refuses a third he will be expelled from the Ranger corps. His worried friends hate to see what's happening to him and try to find a way to stop him from taking such a dark path.

After teenager Maddie sneaks out of her home in the morning for the hundredth time to hunt, her parents have finally lost their patience. They intend to do something to help turn her behavior around, and transition her into a respectable person. So they decide to apprentice Maddie to Will to help both of them, with the hope that training Maddie as a Ranger will snap her out of her spoiled attitude, and at the same time remind Will of the oath of loyalty he took when he joined the Ranger corps. Once again, things don’t go quite as planned and things get complicated in new ways for both.

In this scene, Will’s friends are telling him about Maddie, and Will is about to find out he should train her as an apprentice. There has never been a female ranger.

“It’s Maddie. She’s constantly getting into trouble. She’s running wild and driving them crazy. They’re worried about her and they can’t find a way to bring her under control. They think you might be able to.”

Will frowned. “Me? What can I do? If they can’t handle her, how do they expect me to do it?

“They want you to train her as an apprentice.”

Will actually recoiled in shock at those words. “Maddie? A girl?”

“Maddie. A girl,” Will’s friend said. He reached inside his jerkin and produced a linen envelope, holding it out to Will. “They’ve written to you, asking for your help.”

Training an untamed female apprentice is a tough mission itself. But as they search for truth and justice, Will must face the choice between his quest for revenge and saving innocent lives. What will happen to Maddie and Will? Will they survive? Will they catch the man who murdered Will’s wife? These questions all occurred to me when reading Ranger’s Apprentice, A Royal Ranger, Book 1. Filled with mystery, comedy, and suspense, the first book of The Royal Ranger series is not your average mystery novel. I would highly recommend reading it if you like mystery and suspense..
